Preventing and Dealing With the
Long-Term Effects of Very Early Experiences

Exploring the Behavioral, Psychological, Physical,
Intellectual and Emotional Consequences of
Events During Prenatal Development, Birth and Infancy

Early Experiences Set a Template

Early experiences provide a template for how we experience the rest of our lives. It is a pervasive and intractable force, often obscuring access to our deepest Self and creating self-perpetuating physiological and psychological cycles. The effects of early experiences can be dealt with effectively - but NOT with our usual parenting, therapeutic and educational techniques.

Babies are Sensitive and Aware

Pioneering professionals have researched and written extensively about the sensitivity of prenates and infants and the long-term effects of their earliest experiences. Research shows that:
• prenates are conscious, aware and sensitive
• pre- and perinatal events are remembered
• while all early experience are powerful, prenatal experiences may be the most influential
• prenates and infants take on their parents’ unowned experiences and feelings
• pre- and perinatal experiences may have dramatic long-term effects (positive and negative)
• prenatal and birth experiences can impair bonding (which leads to a host of other problems)

Early Experiences Have Powerful Effects

Early experiences - especially emotionally or physically painful ones - have profound, predictable, long-term  behavioral, physical, psychological, intellectual and emotional consequences. While each person’s history is unique, there are some predictable likely effects of various early experiences. By understanding the true roots of issues or problems we can begin to prevent and/or work with them effectively. Until then, we simply control or adapt to symptoms. The effects of early experiences are numerous, varied, far-reaching and, in our society, unacknowledged. It is vitally important that we recognize these long-term effects and their true roots for our individual and collective mental and physical health.
