Now that you have
read about early trauma/shock, you may want to learn more. Consider hosting
a talk, workshop or training in your area. Here is some information that
might help you.
..
SUBJECT OPTIONS
..
There are MANY options for ways I can support
you. They include:
brief presentations to introduce the basic concepts
of pre- and perinatal experiences, prenates' awareness, and ways to prevent
and treat pre- and perinatal trauma/shock
overviews OR in-depth trainings about the long-term
emotional effects of shock and trauma:
-
at more than 12 stages of prenatal development
(including pre-conception)
-
during birth
-
caused by specific obstetrical interventions
(induction, augmentation, cesarean, anesthesia, forceps/vacuum extraction,
etc)
-
resulting from specific birth circumstances (unwanted,
twins, premature, adoption, breech, circumcision, etc.)
talks and/or trainings on the vital differences
between emotional trauma and emotional shock
workshops to support birthworkers to handle the
conflict, stress and tension (especially those who work in hospital settings)
trainings in how to prevent pre- and perinatal
shock and trauma (primarily for birthworkers)
trainings in how to treat pre- and perinatal
shock and trauma
-
directly (for psychotherapists, psychologists,
etc.)
-
in infants (and families, of course)
-
in adults
-
indirectly (for birthworkers, osteopaths, chiropractors,
cranial-sacral therapists, massage therapists, etc.)
-
in infants (and families, of course)
-
in adults
FORMAT OPTIONS
..
Keep in mind that, depending on your needs,
any of these topics can be presented as a:
short, one-time informative talk (30 minutes
to 3 hours) or a series of short talks (usually one evening at a time)
longer, more in-depth training (one-day, two-day
weekend or week-long)
series of in-depth trainings, scattered across
several months/years (usually for a closed set of people)
combination of short (open to the public) and
in-depth presentations (for parents or practitioners only)
NOTE:
-
Each event can be tailored to your needs, and
will include varying proportions of didactic and experiential content.
-
Some of my best workshop formats have been suggested
by the people who sponsor me - so feel free to make requests or suggestions!
I'm very flexible.
GROUPS AND PROCESS WORKSHOPS
..
I also offer groups and process workshops
that offer individuals an opportunity to focus on their own emotional issues.
In fact, it is impossible to effectively TREAT shock unless you have had
your own shock treated, so these process workshops are necessary for practitioners
who attend the training events.
..
These events can be one-time or on-going
(short or long term); oriented around group support, facilitating teamwork
or deep personal work; open to the public or by invitation only; short
(one evening) or long (5 day or more). Some groups have had a special focus,
such as an all-day group specifically to support birthworkers in handling
the stress of working under adverse conditions. These groups are sometimes
on-going, meeting every three months or so (depending on when I return
to that city).

..
BASIC STEPS FOR SPONSORING AN EVENT
..
Figure out what you need and want
..
You know your situation best. Certainly an
event that is designed for the general community and relies on advertising
and word-of-mouth to draw an audience will need to be planned further in
advance than a training for a group of people who already work or study
together. Some people plan a combination of events - a public talk on Wednesday
evening, a parenting workshop for parents on Thursday evening, private
sessions with clients on Friday (day) and an in-depth training for practitioners
Friday evening-Sunday afternoon. This not only maximizes the benefit but
amortizes costs across more events. In some cities, several groups go together
to share the sponsorship costs and promotional responsibilities.
Living in Houston makes it easier to get to
both coasts; it's worked well to have an open event on Friday night and
a closed workshop/training on Satruday and Sunday. That way I can fly in
late Friday afternoon and fly home Sunday night.
..
Set date(s)
..
First, set a date(s) as far in advance as
possible. This not only helps assure that I will be available when you
want me, but you will have the maximum time to promote the event. However,
do not hesitate to call on short notice - sometimes a last-minute event
comes together well.
..
As much as possible, I schedule trips back-to-back
, especially for cities in the same general part of the continent! For
instance, my workshops in Toronto and New Jersey in the Fall of 99 were
scheduled on back-to-back weekends, which cut down considerably on the
airfare and cross-country travel time - a win/win situation! During the
week in-between, I visit with friends, saw private clients and consulted
with local therapists and midwives. So, the more flexible you can be with
the dates, the more likely we are to be able to share travel costs.
..
Logistics
..
There are a variety of logistical concerns
related to sponsoring an event. Here are a few that will help you think
more clearly about what you are considering.
Arrangements for accommodations
for me
Most sponsors host me in their
homes; a private room with accessible bath is fine. I MUCH prefer to be
picked up at the airport and transported to and from the event site by
folks who are familiar with the area. I do not mind take shuttles to and
from airports if it is not overly time-consuming and clear instructions
are provided; getting back and forth from "home" to "work" in each city
is usually done by riding with whoever I am staying with.
..
Arrangements for a space for the event
I have run events in church
basements, group therapy rooms, in the childbirth education classroom at
a birthing center, and on stage at an arts and music camp. I have run groups
and lectured sitting on the floor in a yoga studio, lying on the floor
of a classroom at a massage school, sitting around the dining room table
at a midwife's home, and standing at a podium on the dais in a large hotel
conference room. We have LOTS of options!
..
Size of audience
Sometimes the size of a group
is limited by the subject matter. For instance, a highly-experiential training
in therapy techniques would be limited to 18-12 people. Most often, the
size of the group is limited by the venue.

Expenses - Terry's
For me, there are three primary
costs: my professional fee for the event, transportation (airfare, shuttles,
etc.), and housing. However, usually housing isn't an issue because I stay
with the sponsor or some other volunteer. As for my professional fees,
I don't have a strict fee schedule. I work with the sponsors of my events
to make things workable for all of us. Some organizations bring me in as
a fundraiser. Sometimes I take a flat fee; sometimes a percentage; sometimes
I arrange a minimum fee and then a percentage of income over that. Because
there are many variables in every situation, it's very hard to say what
an event will cost. Please call and see if we can come up with a plan that
works for all of us! Typical admission fees (in US funds) are:
$ 95 per person for a 3 hour talk
$350 per day per person for smaller, experiential
or intensive trainings
$ 255 per 90-minute therapy or consultation session
$ 1000 and up per lecture or workshop (depends
on the length, subject, etc.) that is part of a conference or other event
where my event doesn't have its own separate admission fee
Expenses - Other
Some expenses involved
in promoting an event can include: space rental, promotional costs (advertising,
copying, postage, etc.), and organizing costs (often donated by the sponsoring
organization or volunteered by coordinators in exchange for free admission).
..
Promotion
I have a variety of templates
from past events that we can use to prepare customize materials for
promoting talks, workshops and trainings - including flyers, brochures
and news releases. Usually I prepare a master copy and each sponsor makes
and distributes copies locally. I am available for telephone interviews
for radio and print in advance and television once I arrive...
LET'S TALK!
..
I am thrilled to be able to help spread this
important information and appreciate your interest. Please get in touch
and see what we can work out.
..
If you can not come to one of my workshops
and are not ready to bring me to your city, check out my training
tapes. ..
